The Center for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) has reaffirmed its commitment to working together with the Judiciary in making sure that mobile courts are reaching out to people in the hard to reach areas as one way of cautioning people against committing different crimes including defilement.

One of the programs coordinator at the Center Maxwell Mvula made the remarks at Mayani in Dedza district where a mobile court led by Senior Resident Magistrate James Mankhwazi convicted and sentenced a 42-year-old man Harrison Maganizo to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty of defiling a 14-year-old girl.

“We want to make sure that people are getting justice and we believe our collaboration with the Judiciary on mobile courts will help in ending defilement cases in the country,” Mvula said.

He revealed that their main aim in supporting mobile courts is to make people aware of the negative side of commiting crimes like defilement which is currently on the rise.

In his remarks, Station Prosecutor for Linthipe Police, Sub Inspector Precious Chaundwa described the mobile courts as an eye opener to the community.

“We want people to be aware of the proceedings in court and learn from other people’s mistakes,” He indicated.

Meanwhile, Chairperson for child protection at Mayani, Friday Philimon said such kind of judgements like the one given to Harrison will help to deter other would be-offenders.

Harrison committed the offence on 22nd November, 2024 at Mangani Village, Traditional Authority Tambala in Dedza District.
